I began developing my teaching philosophy in my Education core studies 100 class, which was in my first year of university. Looking back at philosophy, much has evolved throughout the last three years of university. My philosophy is continually growing and changing due to the more real life experience I am gaining. However, many of the common themes throughout my first philosophy is very similar. One of the main ideas of my philosophy then and now are that the students are more important than the content being taught.
I believe...
... Creating a classroom environment where students feel safe, are represented, and able to be themselves is needed to foster authentic learning.
... All students are different. They should not be all expected to learn the same way. Differentiation is a necessity.
... Relationships with students, parents, and colleagues are one of the most important aspects and should be fostered.
... All bias needs to be left outside the classroom. Everyone should be respected and have the opportunity for no preconceived ideas because of ones gender, race, language, culture, etc.
... There should be lessons with rich, authentic experiences for students to engage in.
... students need to be engaged and interested in what they are learning, now matter the topic or the subject. Including students interests in the planning will be very valuable.
... Brain and movement breaks are a very useful tool.
... That its okay if something does not go as planned. Reflect and try something new.
... Collaboration is key!
... A teacher can “shift gears” and adapt to any situation if something isn’t working or a “teachable” moment comes along
... Assessment is important. Whether it is for the students or the teacher, formative assessment and reflections are needed to improve the learning.
